Our courses are designed as intensive short-duration modular distance learning
courses. This means they may be undertaken at your own pace, although it is
preferable that they are done in the specified time scale of six months.
We realise that from time to time family or other commitments may mean that
students require extensions and these should be discussed with your tutor.
Courses may only be passed by successfully answering a series of examination
questions throughout the course followed by a final examination. You will be
assigned a tutor who will be available on line or by telephone to assist you. There
is also a one day live role-play assessment undertaken during a weekend. A
buffet lunch is provided.
Our tutors are here to help you understand and identify the relevant issues; how
to formulate responses and draft answers but in turn you must demonstrate that
you are able to apply the knowledge you have gained.
Our courses do not address legal theory in any measure but instead concentrate
on practice and procedure.
You should note that a degree of self-discipline with regard to studying and
observing time scales is essential in returning set course work which may be
done on line or by post.
It is likely that during the course you will need to attend Court and you should
therefore note that if you are working you may need to take time off on two
occasions between the hours of 10.00am and 4.00pm during weekdays, these
being the hours that Courts sit.
The course providers are aware that some answers to the set examination may
be available on line and could be answered without fully understanding the
course. To use such methods may prove counter-productive if you, the student,
do not fully understand the subject matter.
The course encompasses the following:
•
Civil Law
•
Client Interviewing
•
General Paralegal skills
•
Family Law (overview)
•
Criminal Law (overview including a knowledge of PACE, Police station
advice and clerking)
•
Wills, Trusts and Probate
•
Motoring
The periodic modular examination questions will be answered by assignments,
drafting, responsive role-play test (at which your attendance will be necessary)
and course work. Course work and examinations are set by CD or written
coursework and written task completion. The final mark will indicate a fail, a pass,
a pass with merit, a pass with distinction, or a distinction with honours.
Additional modules will enable a student to be a Fellow of the Academy rather
than an associate member.
